The Investors for Opioid Accountability (IOA)

The IOA, a diverse coalition of 54 members representing treasurers, publicly elected comptrollers, asset managers, faith-based, public and labor funds with over $3.5 trillion in assets under management, was established in July 2017 out of heightened concerns that opioid company risks may threaten shareholder value and have profound long-term implications for the economy and society.

Since inception, IOA members, through their equity ownership have engaged in dialogue and the filing of shareholder resolutions with opioid manufacturers, distributors and retail pharmacies.  The IOA drew upon the success that the Teamsters and several state treasurers had with McKesson in securing a board risk report on opioids and separating the Chair and CEO.  The IOA also drew on the long-standing history of corporate engagement between the faith-based investor community and pharmaceutical companies on drug pricing risks.

These corporate engagements have informed the IOA’s views on best corporate governance practices that strengthen corporate culture, board accountability, compensation incentives and risk mitigation; all important governance practices that we have identified as part of our root cause assessment related to the crisis and central to strengthening boards going forward.
