Wal-Mart: Sustainability
ICCR Members Launch Sustainability Campaign at Wal-Mart Stores,
Inc.
NEW YORK CITY, NY///March 25, 2005///ICCR Member the General Board of Pension
and Health Benefits of the United Methodist Church today launched a campaign
urging Wal-Mart shareholders to vote for proposal
number 5 on the company's annual proxy statement, which asks that Wal-Mart's
Board of Directors prepare a sustainability report.
Sustainability is a business model that instructs companies to take into consideration
the needs and interests of various stakeholders while concurrently sustaining
their business, communities, and the environment for future generations. Sustainability
also entails measuring and reporting corporate performance against economic,
social and environmental criteria. The General Board and the 30 other ICCR filers
are concerned about Wal-Mart's lack of coherent transparency and openness in
public reporting on social, economic and environmental issues.
