Bro. Steven O’Neil, SM

NGO Representative to the UN for Marianists International

Bro. Steve has been a Marianist since 1987. His educational background is in Biology Education. He taught science at the high school and undergraduate level. In the early 1990’s as he was living and working at Martin House, a Catholic outreach program in inner-city Trenton, N.J., he began studying creation/eco-spirituality. In 1992 he completed a Master’s Degree in Creation Spirituality at the Institute for Culture and Creation Spirituality. He used that background to help begin the Marianist Environmental Education Center in Dayton, Ohio.

In 2000 he moved to Baltimore as part of the Provincial Council and worked in the Office of Peace & Justice where he first started working on corporate responsibility issues with ICCR. With the merging of the four US Marianist provinces into one in 2002, he was asked by the Marianist General Administration in Rome to explore the possibility of having a Marianist NGO representative to the United Nations in New York. The Marianists were accredited as an official NGO to the UN through the Department of Public Information in May of 2006. The mandate for the NGO is to address those international policy issues which directly impact the lives of children and youth.
